Rainbows

Today was a hard day...the funeral for Ken was this morning. The Skyland Fire Department brought out their color guard and they blocked every intersection from Groce to the the cemetery. It was especially hard to drive past Ken's house. The road will not be a bother to him anymore. Everyone talks about progress..making roads wider, schools larger, and bringing in more people. Not something I want for Avery's Creek. I can say that because I am here, already moved, and a member of this great community. I drive past Aunt Eva's house everyday and hear her voice..."Now Charlie". Where SE's cows always stood is now a subdivision. But there is gold at the bottom of this dark cloud, at the the end of the rainbow. I am lucky to remember these great folks we have lost. To hear Jesse Ledbetter tell me last night it good to see the Johnston Farm still running. To know I can walk into the local restaurant and everyone waves and knows you by name and the glass of sweet tea is waiting at the corner. I have lived in big cities and small towns all cross this country but the place I call home in here on the farm. It was said today at Ken's funeral if you know Ken you were his friend. We can learn a lot about life from this older generation and hopefully pass it on to our kids. As the flag was being folded and the bag pipes played Amazing Grace a certain wave came across me. A calming one. Live life to the fullest, smile at everyone who passes you, and never go to bed angry. What will be said when I am gone...I will not know. But I hope that my family will be as close as the Corn were and always has been. I salute you Mr Corn for the service to your family, this community, and the fire department. The 5 5 5 bells will never leave my mind. Your job is complete.

They always say only the good die young...

that is so untrue. We lost another good southern gentleman this week. Ken Corn was an amazing man. I Cherish the long talks about the past with him and growing up in the area with my family. Once he is gone so are the stories but the memories are still there. Avery's Creek will miss Mr Corn!

Kenneth W. "Pop" Corn, 87, of Arden passed away peacefully Sunday, April 26, 2009, at the John F. Keever Jr. Solace Center in Asheville.

He was a native and life long resident of Buncombe County, the son of Wiley O. Corn and Maggie L. Corn and husband of the late Betty Howell Corn, who died in 1998.

Pop was a member of the "Greatest Generation" serving his country in the United States Army during World War II and serving his community as a volunteer firefighter ultimately achieving the rank of Fire Chief. Before enlisting, Pop worked as a welder in the shipping yards in Norfolk, Virginia where he worked on the U.S.S. Yorktown and its sister ship the U.S.S. Essex.

Recognizing the need to serve his country during wartime, Pop enlisted in the U.S. Army and was sent to North Africa. During the fighting in Africa, he was wounded by shrapnel and returned to the States to heal. The Army then assigned Pop to the 95th Gas Treatment Battalion headed for the European theater. In August of 1944, Pop arrived with the battalion at Utah Beach and participated in several battles including the Heurtgen Forest Campaign and the Battle of the Bulge. The U.S. Army awarded Pop's battalion the Meritorious Unit Commendation for superior performance of exceptionally difficult tasks.

Pop's devotion to serving others didn't end with the end of the war. He was one of the original volunteers to form the Skyland Volunteer Fire Department in Arden. He served as a volunteer firefighter for twenty-five years and served as Fire Chief from 1973 until 1975. Pop also worked at the Dupont plant in Brevard N.C. for twenty-eight years retiring in 1983.

He is survived by a daughter, Barbara C. Tharp of Arden; three sons, Michael R. Corn and his wife, Mary Louise, of Fletcher, Russell A. Corn and his wife, Connie, of Arden and Gary L. Corn and his wife, Gail, of Fletcher; his sister, Mary Frances Briggs of Arden and his brother, Clarence Corn and his wife, Virginia, of Arden. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, John R. Corn, Kenneth C. Corn, Jeffrey S. Tharp, Jennifer M. Tharp, Michael Langford Tharp, Dallas L. Guthrie and Dakota E. Guthrie and five great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday in the chapel of Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian conducted by the Rev. Ray Hipps. Interment will follow in Roberts Memorial Park with Firefighter Honors provided by the Buncombe County Firefighters Honor Guard. Serving as pallbearers will be his grandsons.

baby chick

we tried out the incubator that the girls got for Christmas...all that hatched was 1 little chick..we named her Bebas. She is a white silkie.

Games

You always know when it is spring...you are always running from one kids sports to the other. Jenna is the manager of her middle school girls soccer team. Sam is playing fast pitch softball. Tori is just enjoying all the games. We also try to squeeze in Jonathan's softball games. So, if you try to call and all you hear is yelling you have the right number we are just rooting for our favorite team.

farm girl

I know I can get lots of help on the farm if I ask but I feel good...I built the new goat/sheep pen by myself and the new duck house. The girls and I then moved the pig to it's new cage and the roosters to theirs. I think I did pretty good. Only hit my thumb once and got one cut from the wire. I did not get my grandfather's ability to build things..but they are still standing.

wild horses

the wild mustangs were at the Ag Center for sale...it was hard but we did not buy one
They were amazing animals and I felt sorry for them, but there are so many horses out there in WNC that need a good home because their owners can't afford them any more.

Jimmy Wayne

One of our organizations we wanted to help was the Jimmy Wayne-CRKA foundation. Jimmy touched our hearts when we meet him at a Toys for Tots concert. He is the reason we started this 12 months of giving this year. One of my favorite quotes from him is "It is not were you have been but where you are going". Here is his story...There was hardly a dry eye when Jimmy told his story of being raised on the streets and living in foster homes or group homes. As he always does, he tried to thank as many people as possible for helping him fulfill his dreams to be a musical artist in Nashville. At times, he had to pause due to overwhelming emotion, but he managed to get his point across to many of the kids and some adults in the audience. He told everyone about how he had lived with the Costner family and how they had helped him mature into a responsible adult. He also told how when both Mr. and Mrs. Costner died, how much he missed them and loved them and appreciated their influence in his life. One of our volunteers, at least, had the for sight to bring tissues and shared what she had with those of us who still cry even though we've heard Jimmy's testimonial dozens of times. (Thanks Brenda). And of course, so many of Jimmy's songs touch the heart and soul one just cannot help but feel every emotional word of them. That's one of Jimmy's many talents is to touch the spirit in such a way that his music often reminds us of our own difficult challenges in life. But they are also uplifting in that you always have an opportunity to do more with your life. It's like that old cliche: "God never shuts one door without opening another." Life is filled with opportunities-it's up to us to seek them out. Even if people disappoint us, God is always there for us to depend upon.
If you get the chance check out his site or just turn on the radio. http://www.jimmywayne.com/
One of the things they asked for was stuffed animals to throw to the foster kids in the crowd. With the help of the church we brought 88 stuffed animals for the cause. The girls helped make posters and I help set up. It was an amazing day.

meet the new kittens

here they are ...they were born the 30 th of March...aren't they cute
If any one wants please let us know

Spring Break

The first part of the break should have been called rainy break, it rained for 3 days. But that didn't stop us. The Bear and the girls had a great time during the days and I filled in at night. They had a lazy day, they went to the movies, Tori went to a sleep over, and they went on a hunt to find the new kittens. They also made the coolest clipboards. I took them to the batting cage, we all went bowling, we went to see the wild horses, we went rock climbing, and went to help out the Jimmy Wayne foundation. The weather turned warm by the end of the week and we all enjoyed it.

Easter

The day started off a little chilly, Sam and I went to sunrise service @ 7 am. Then we went to Granny Bear's to get the twins and say good bye to Jan. Then it was off to church. The girls and the kids played the chimes during the service. After that we met Ho and Bear at the Biltmore for a picnic and the egg hunt. Then the day came to an end with the girls and I going to dinner to Jonathan's mom. We ate and played outside while enjoying the great weather. From sunrise to sunset I got to spend my day with my favorite people in the world. Easter is not about eggs and candy (the peanut butter eggs do add some fun) it is about the unconditional love that Jesus had/has for us. We need to show that kind of love to others around us no matter how mad they make us. To forgive and forget and then move on. Hope your Easter was as good as ours was.

no rabiits for us

Most people get rabbits for Easter but not us...Uncle Donny brought us 2 rams and 2 goats. The goats are to replace the 2 we lost at Christmas, Tori & Sam's and the rams were bottle babies from their house. My sheep is the larger one, his name is Kringle (he was born on Christmas day), the other sheep's name is James. The brown and white goat is Tori's and his name is Anthony. The tan one is Sam's goat name Jr. (that is for all you Jr 88 fans). The funny farm is growing and growing.

Aunt Jan

Aunt Jan came up to help us celebrate Easter. We had a great time. She went to see Sam play softball on Thursday. We all got together for dinner on Friday, afterwards we taught Jan & Jonathan how to play Mexican Train (we stayed up until after 11 playing). On Saturday we went to see the winning birdhouses from the Grove Park and went to the Harley Place, and then had lunch. Afterwards, I was dropped off and the girls went to pan for gems with the grown ups. Sunday morning we got up and had breakfast. It was a short visit, we hope she comes back soon.

Grove Park birdhouses

All 3 girls entered the birdhouse competition again this year. Sam made an apple one with red birds on it. Jenna made a log cabin with the dixie flag and american flag decoration all over it. Tori did the Sloppy Joes bird shake. Tori won 2nd place in the kid division. Her house is displayed in the main lobby of the hotel. All 3 girls have donated their houses to the Habit again this year. They will auction them off and all money raised will go to building homes in the Asheville area. Way to go girls!
